Q. ARE SOMETHING SPECIAL MEALS 100% ORGANIC?
A. Not yet, but it’s most certainly in our plans. Currently we source 100% Organic Produce, Rice, Beans, Milk, Yogurt, Eggs, Whole Grain Bread, Corn, Agave & Cottage Cheese. For a review of the other ingredients we use, such as Grass-fed Beef and Non GMO Whole Wheat Flour, please refer to our Information tab and scroll to “Ingredients” or email us at SomethingSpecialMeals@gmail.com for a list of our ingredient standards.
Q. HOW ARE SOMETHING SPECIAL MEALS PACKAGED?
A. Our meals are individually packaged and labelled with your child’s name, classroom (when applicable) and menu description. We source eco-friendly packaging from Eco Products & Bottle Box. All our Hot Lunches will be packaged in sugar cane bases, as they are a healthier option for reheating when compared to plastic containers.
Q. WHY ARE YOUR HOT LUNCHES DELIVERED COLD?
A. Our Hot Lunches are fully cooked, delivered cold and packaged for reheating on campus. Some Schools may choose to offer only our Cold ENTREE Menu if warming lunches is not conducive to their lunchtime environment. When we started our lunch program we knew we wanted to offer a better-quality product to your children (and our own). One of the biggest complaints we hear about hot lunches is that by the time the children get through the lunch-line, their meals are soggy and mushy. Even the best quality food loses integrity once it’s sat in a hot box for a prolonged period. We are developing a hot lunch program that will be offered exclusively to a select few schools within 10 miles from our catering kitchen. This program will focus on menu items that will not lose their integrity during hot holding on campus.
Q. WHAT IF MY CHILD IS ABSENT?
A. Our order and cancellation deadlines are 48 hours prior. You may revise or cancel your order with 48 hours’ notice in our online system. Meal cancellations will be posted to your account as credits. If the absence is unexpected you may be able to pick-up your child’s lunch from school, depending on your school’s food storage policy and refrigeration.
Q. WHO REVIEWS YOUR MENUS?
A. Dietitian and co-owner of Feeding Littles Megan McNamee MPH, RDN reviews our menus each month for nutrient quality and compliance with all state and federal nutrition standards. Megan and her co-owner Judy Delaware, an Occupational Therapist specializing in feeding therapy, have created online courses that help parents learn how to feed their little ones. Infant Feeding: The Baby-led Way teaches Baby-led Weaning (Infant Self-feeding - perfect for new eaters and babies transitioning to self-feeding), whiles Feeding Littles: Toddlers helps prevent or manage picky eating in kids 12 months and older. Learn more at feedinglittles.com and use code ‘SOMETHINGSPECIAL’ for $15 off either course! We have found that the Feeding Littles Group is a wonderful resource to us as parents and welcome you to join their community here.
Q. CAN YOU ACCOMMODATE ALLERGIES?
A. We are happy to accommodate most allergies. After you’ve created your online profile, please email us so we may update our notes with your child’s specific dietary needs. We have several measures in place to limit the risk of cross-contamination when preparing allergy meals; however, we cannot ensure that there is no risk. We cannot be held liable should an allergic reaction occur. Our meals do not contain nuts or shellfish; however, we do operate out of a kitchen that handles nuts, nut products and shellfish. Our kitchen and some of our lunch options contain Egg, Wheat, Gluten, Dairy, Soy, Corn & Salmon.
Q. MY CHILD IS A 1 YEAR OLD. ARE YOUR PETITE MEALS CUT INTO SMALL, BITE-SIZE PIECES?
A. The difference in our Petite, Preschool & Primary meals are mainly the portion and packaging sizes. We list age recommendations for each meal option based on the portions and age appropriate sides. Our Primary meals may have whole grapes, house-made tortilla chips, lettuce or whole baby carrots and our Petite & Primary Meals do not as they may pose a choking risk to children under 5 years of age. When preparing our Petite & Preschool meals we offer foods in various safes sizes to allow children to practice eating all appropriate textures and types of foods. We are very careful to not offer any choking hazards. Any food has the potential to become a choking hazard and children should always be closely monitored while eating.
Q. MY CHILD DOES NOT ATTEND A SCHOOL YOU CURRENTLY SERVICE. HOW CAN I GET SOMETHING SPECIAL MEALS FOR HIM/HER?
